·         Retractable awning - A folding arm retractable awning is an awning which can be rolled up and closed.

·         Frame - the skeleton of the awning and comprises of the mounting bar or square bar, arms, and roller tube.                                   

·         Mounting bar (square bar) – It is the base of the folding arm. When the awning is retracted, the awning fabric rolls around the roller tube attached to the mounting bar.

·         Shoulder - the joints on the retractable awning arms where arms attach to the mounting.

·         Front bar - the extrusion at the very front of the awning frame.

·         Hood - A cover which fits over the retractable awning frame and fabric. When the awning retracts, the hood protects the exposed fabric.

·         Rib - the cross bars of the frame which support the awning fabric.

There are many styles of retractable awnings:

·      Folding arm awning – It consists of two or more arms, the front bar, mounting bar and the fabric. This is the most popular style for homes and commercial buildings and can extend as far as 4 meters without external supports.

·      Pivot arm awning (also known as drop arm awning) - has arms that move outward and down from the roller tube as they pivot from their hinge brackets.  This feature allows the awning to be adjusted and can extend to around 1.5 meters.

·      Vertical screen – It is mounted vertically to extend downward. It has no arms and is mainly used in outdoor areas.

·         Motor - electrical operation of the awning by remote control they are enclosed in the roller tube.

There are two major categories of fabrics:

·         Canvas - A natural fiber (cotton) woven fabric they are prone to fade, mildew, and rot.

·         Solution-dyed acrylic - A man-made fiber which is lightweight and breathable. It is a chemical polymer and does not rot. Due to manufacturing technique the fabric is highly fade resistant and long lasting. In addition to this it also acts as a sealant resistant to water and stains.

Common irregularities: The nature of the fabric is that, you can some natural "imperfections" after your awning is installed.
